School Direct

Stockport School continues to build on its success as a high quality ITT provider in its partnership with Cheadle Hulme High School (CHHS), Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) and other members of the Greater Manchester Altius Teaching Alliance.

The Altius Context... in partnership

The Altius Alliance specialises in School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT). Our vision for the Altius Alliance is to continue to be a centre of excellence for producing outstanding teachers for children aged 11-16.

The Altius Alliance is led by Cheadle Hulme High School (CHHS) under the umbrella of the Laurus Trust. Stockport School is part of the Alliance which is located across Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.

It is within this context you can gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) within the trust. We are in partnership with The Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) for the award of PGCE.

Schools Involved in the Altius Alliance

Stockport School works as a partner school to Cheadle Hulme High School, as the lead teaching school of the wider Greater Manchester Altius Teaching Alliance.

It is intended that School Direct trainees will have oppurtunity to train at Stockport School, CHHS and across the Altius Alliance. This comprises of:

Secondary Schools

Sixth Form Colleges

Pupil Referral Units

Special Educational Needs

Primary Schools

Why choose School Direct as a way to train?

  • You will spend more time in school than trainees on a ‘traditional’ PGCE route.
  • You will be training alongside outstanding teachers and lead professionals.
  • You will receive excellent professional development within our Alliance schools and with our University partners.
  • You will experience the diversity of excellent education providers in different types of schools with different specialisms within our Teaching School Alliance.
  • You will still have access to University facilities e.g. libraries, lectures etc
  • You will gain a PGCE with Masters Accreditation through Manchester Metropolitan University (graded as Outstanding for all areas of Initial Teacher Training).
  • You will be supported in seeking employment on successful completion of training.

Employment

School Direct trainees who successfully complete their training may be employed in any school within the wider alliance. There can, however, be no guarantee of employment because of circumstances that may exist in schools, The Altius Alliance Schools will be expected to support you in securing employment. Trainees would be required to go through a full and formal application process for any vacancies.

School Direct Programme

  • If you secure a place on this route the tuition fees for the programme will be £9000. These fees are paid to MMU in a series of instalments across the academic year. There are a number of different funding options available to support you with these payments.
  • You may be eligible for a tax free bursary or scholarship to support your training. These funding streams are dependent on the phase/subject in which you are training your qualifications. A high degree classification will allow you access to extra bursary funding. A Masters or PhD could also ensure you receive further funding. Full details regarding bursaries and scholarships can be found on the Teaching Agency website:http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/funding.aspx
  • In addition you could also apply for a student loan to support your payments through student finance.http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk
